Vampirism - the belief that some corpses can leave their graves at night and suck the blood of living people.

Just what is our obsession with the blood-sucking, the immortal and the downright deadly? From Buffy the Vampire Slayer, to the latest teen movie Twilight and the new sex-driven True Blood? We are obsessed on a global scale, to the point that even if you’re not a fan of the vampire world there’s no escape. We are quite simply captivated by the unreal. We desire and want the unknown and the belief in vampires definitely fulfills this. They are erotic and sexy, in a peculiar way. Yet at the same time they are terrifying and deadly. An odd mix you say? Well, in the words of the infamous Edward Cullen, “I’m designed to kill, everything about me draws you in; my face, my voice, even my smell.” When it comes to sexy, ruggedly handsome 17-year-old vampires such as Edward who can deny the attraction?

The world that is Twilight is the source of our obsessive nature. Ever since the film was released in November 2008 the world has fallen head-over-heels in love with the saga. The next chapter, New Moon,  is released on Friday and there’s no denying it will be an immense success. With another two films to follow vampires aren’t disappearing anytime soon. I’m not going to pretend that I’m not an obsessive freak, because I fully am, I am a Twi-hard, as they say. I even queued up for hours on Wednesday afternoon in an attempt to get a view of the red carpet for the New Moon fan party, where the likes of Robert Pattinson (Edward Cullen), Kristen Stewart (Bella Swan) and Taylor Lautner (Jacob Black) graced their adoring fans with their presence. Sadly, I was let through the barriers and then told to go back. I was devastated, mortified and heart-broken. We won’t go there though! The worrying thing is how infatuated we really are. I read the other day that girls were making themselves bleed when they saw Pattinson as an offering of their blood. If that’s not creepy then god knows what is! I also noticed that there’s a huge amount of Twi-mums who are also fanatics! Twilight’s fan base is ever-growing and even you guys (who wish you were Edward) will soon catch on!

I’m sorry to the few of you that hate Twilight and are fed up of reading about it but heck, I’m not alone! For those that don’t understand the mesmerisation then please let me explain: Edward is a vampire, yes, but he is kind and loving on the inside, as he explores his human instincts. He meets Bella and does everything he can to overcome his natural vampire needs (such as her blood!) to be with her, they are both in love, yet they shouldn’t be together. The attraction is that he is making a huge sacrifice for her, including the fact he won’t turn her into a vampire (to make things well, easier) as he won’t ‘end her life’. Really, Edward is a romantic, loving, yet dangerous guy and we can’t get enough of him! Let’s see what happens Friday with the arrival of Jacob’s secret. As it is probably clear by now, I am Team Edward all the way!
