How many bad hair days do you have every week? 5? 6? Or maybe you’re one of those lucky few whose hair never needs products, a blow drier or a straightner? Sadly for the rest of us we do and because perfect hair is an ideal not a reality, most of us girls end up with several bad hair days a week.

There’s the rain day – when your hair was passable and then it rained. (Snow day comes under the same category). Then there’s hair wash day – if like mine your hair is too much work to wash every day, when you do wash it, it’s too frizzy/wet/silky/poofy to do anything remotely passable with it and you end up wearing a hat. Then there’s the day after the day you washed it – grease starts to emerge from the top of your head resulting in half an attempt to hide it through a quiff or some other method. Basically, hair’s pretty much impossible without enrolling the aid of a hairdresser, even when you are armed with gel, spray, crème, leave in conditioner, hair drier, tongs, a straightner and 2 hours labour. No wonder most hair dressers start at £55 for an up-do.

BUT! Hair is my crowning glory and I would feel naked without it – which is probably why we haven’t as yet had Britney-fever take over London, where women with men’s haircuts (short, back and sides) are like a Starbucks on every street corner.

So, is it possible to have sexy hair every day without waking up at the crack of dawn with the intention of sewing your own wig?  I say yes…once you know a few magic tricks that will turn your hair from scraggly to sexy.

Firstly there’s Batiste Blush Dry Shampoo 150 ml for £2.07, this is the sensation taking over the nation – quite literally – up and coming hair stylists are being taught in their styling courses to use this high street product! It’s for those the day after the day you washed it days – when grease is beginning to make your hair look like an oily chip pan and there’s no time (or energy) to wash your mane. Simply spray onto hair and then brush out for freshly washed locks! Not only can it make your hair clean again, but it can do the opposite too! For girls whose hair is normally too sleek to tie up without 10,000 pins, use this product – it gives your hair much needed friction so that you can style away to your heart’s desire.

For those frizzy days or rain days, when your hair just seems like it wants you to stick your finger into an electric socket to really complete the look, try the ten-minute twist. Put a pea sized drop of anti-frizz serum into the palm of your hand, try John Freida Frizz-Ease, £5.85 for 50ml. Rub it through your hair and then twist it up and secure with a crocodile clip. Leave for ten minutes and then shake it out to reveal frizz free hair!

No matter how skilled you are with your fingers or how well your hair responds to your touch, we all have impossible days. Where you spend three-times as long in the mirror, with no results and by the time you realise you’re late, you’ve exhausted every single product in your household (including partners, parents, male siblings and the dogs). For days like this, there’s only one answer: a donut. And I don’t mean the sugar, jam filled type. These can be bought in Boots for £4.99 and are a round shaped sponge that is the answer to your hair-mares. Tie your hair into a low pony tail and pull it through the ring of the donut. Put your head forward and allow the tail of your hair to cover the sponge. Pin in place and wrap any loose ends around it. W-alla! A Carrie bun, so sexy even SJP would be proud! The great thing about this hair style is that it works on any hair length, long short or cropped. You can also pull out loose curls for effortless evening glam!

For a hair wash on the go – no I don’t literally mean a bucket of water and shampoo in the car, but a wash-and-go hair style – when you leave the house with wet hair. Wash your hair as usual and brush leave-in-conditioner through it, try Aussie Miracle Hair Insurance, £3.49 for 250 ml – it’ll leave your hair glossy and will minimise frizz. Then part your hair and blow dry the roots, which should only take 5 minutes and you’re ready to go! As long as your roots aren’t frizzy the rest of your hair can do what it wants and you’ll still look amazing!

Sometimes you just want to be pretty, and most of us don’t have time to care what we look like first thing in the morning. So for pretty days – wash your hair the night before and brush through with V05 Mega Hold Gel Spray, £2.73 for 200 ml. Then part into two and braid into two French plaits. In the morning, undo the plaits and you’ll have pretty mermaid waves.
