If you ever wanted to find an alternative to Levi Straus and Co for all your denim needs, then “The H.D Lee Merc Company” is no bad suggestion.
Founded in 1889 by H.D Lee in Selina, Kansas, Lee introduced such classic wear as the workers bib and in 1926 invented the world first zip-fly. The storm rider jacket followed which made headlines as the winter version of the slim Denim Jacket was launched. Work wear is firmly in its heritage with the company producing only overalls and dungarees in America until 1954 when it expanded into fashion wear. Work wear was so important for the company because of the poor quality and inconsistent delivery from Eastern suppliers, and Lee Co is widely acclaimed of improving the standard of clothes in America in the 19th century.
A new limited edition line celebrating the brands 120th anniversary has recently been launched, with the famous founders signature on every shirt and jeans, plus a purchase of a pair of jeans comes with a free bag.
It’s fair to say that Lee Co is one of the good eggs when it comes to big denim brands and globalisation; the company has raised over $75 million since 1996 to help fund breast cancer research programmes.
