The 2009 MTV Movie Awards brought in an audience of 5.3 million viewers, up 76 % from last year. In fact, it hailed the largest audience since 2004.

Though some may attribute the whopping numbers to the Boris/Eminem butt meet face stunt, the continual references to Twilight throughout the evening, combined with the number of nominations the indie flick received surely was responsible for making the largest impression on viewers.

In fact, some would say that newly helmed A-lister, Rob Pattinson, is almost single-handedly responsible for the jump in ratings.

The 2009 Oscars, which aired in February, debuted Rob looking uncomfortable, yet smashing, in a sexy black tuxedo. Heralding a coveted front and center spot during the event was an interesting placement for the 23 year old dreamy-eyed actor, considering he was not nominated for any awards and made just a small presentation during the prestigious event.

This year’s Oscar ratings among teens 12-17 and kids 2-11 skyrocketed up 25 percent and 33 percent, respectively, from last year, ABC said, citing Nielsen stats. The show won its time slot in the 18-49 demo with 36.3 million viewers, beating out American Idol by over 10 million viewers.

Playing devil’s advocate, one could argue that Zac Efron, too, was at these events, and perhaps the increase in ratings could be attributed to the vivacious HSM3 tweens clamoring to view the moppy headed blue eyed hunk and his on screen/off screen squeeze, Vanessa Hudgens. I’ve seen the Twilight/Robert Pattinson fan base in action, however, and I beg to differ.

The same shows I’ve always snubbed, the Oscars and MTV Music Awards, I TIVo’d this year, just to catch a glimpse of Rob’s jaw on the big screen. I dare say millions of other hot-blooded women faithful to the Twilight Saga did exactly the same.
