To many fans, Rob’s trip to Cannes offered another venue to spy the handsome star in an intriguing environment other than set-stalking New Moon pics snapped in Vancouver.
For me, it marked a time of sadness- a revelation, if you will. I adored reminiscing at bright-eyed (ok, bedroom eyed) Rob talking about becoming a vampire in an indie flick with a sense of innocence, while screaming fan girls made him dart and twitch in horror. It was endearing.
The first pics that emerged from Cannes showed Rob surrounded by dozens of paparazzi. With his trademark smile, Rob posed for minutes, seemingly unfazed. His red carpet interview at the premiere of Inglorious Basterds confirmed my fears. The same rabid fan girls could be heard screaming in the background, and Rob acknowledged them without batting a manicured eyebrow, expressing the fact that he’s getting used to the chaos.
Rob’s cast members recently told MTV how impressed they are with how Rob has handled his transformation into celeb A-lister. They also lament at the precautions Rob has to take now that fame has infiltrated his personal life.
“I’ve talked to Rob about it, and he’s just paranoid all the time now,” says Peter Facinelli, patriarch of the Twilight Saga. “Like, even to go down to the Starbucks, he’s ducking behind cars and does a roll-flip to the coffee shop. Then he gets up, and there’s nobody there — but then the one time that he doesn’t do that, that’s when there’s like 10,000 paparazzi jumping out of the bushes.”
If there’s a silver lining, Michael Welch defines it. “He’s the same guy that I met before he was world-famous, which is just a really laid-back, quirky, funny British dude,” says Welch. “[But his notoriety] is crazy. I don’t know how he does it. I’m glad I’m Mike, dude.”
