Unlike other red carpets where stars have a tendency to go renegade – Cannes Film Festival has a reputation as the most chic, stylised and on trend in all the land. Forget the ground breaking cinema, pioneering scripts and all that, Cannes is all about the world’s most beautiful people wearing the world’s most beautiful clothes. And no, The Sharpener isn’t bitter.
First up, at the premiere of Russell Crowe’s man-in-tights bonanza Robin Hood, Helen Mirren opted for a full length black Elie Saab number with incredibly well-placed rouching, while Natalie Imbruglia looked like a sepia-toned angel in her nude Alberta Ferretti gown with crystal emblazoned detail.
The screening of Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps also saw plenty of stars looking a million dollars (GROAN!), with Kate Beckinsale looking like a fairy princess in her silk georgette gown from Gucci Premiere, Carey Mulligan in a black Azzaro gown with her hair in marcel waves, and The Sharpener’s personal favourite, Aishwarya Rai, looking resplendent in her magenta pleated chiffon from Gucci.
Other notable mentions must go to Naomi Watts who shimmered in a baby pink strapless number decorated with snowflakey sequins and ribbon details by Gucci Premiere, whilst the ethereal beauty Cate Blanchett wore a black and silver gown by Alexander McQueen. We also have reserved A LOT of outfit envy for Salma Hayek who has been seen sporting a quite impossible amount of Gucci couture throughout the festival, in various shades of show stopping reds with tumbling asymmetric straps and sprinklings of red crystals. SIGH.
I mean, we’re exhausted. Who knew it was possible for anyone other than The Sharpener to possess not only beauty and talent but ALSO sartorial know-how like this?
