Reports have been flying all over the shop that the Beach Boys are very ticked off with Miss Perry’s song California Girls.
Apparently, the 60’s band feel they are owed song writing credit as Katy’s track not only shares the same title, but has similar musical content.
A source said :”Katy has cribbed one of the most famous lyrics in history, so [The Beach Boys] should be entitled to a writing credit and a portion of the royalties,”
Say Whaaaaat?! We don’t think we’re alone in thining this accusation is completely ridiculous. Afterall, our Katy is a California Girl so why shouldn’t she write a song about the place she grew up and the people she grew up with.
Thankfully, the Beach Boys have denied this absurb rumour, claiming to be very flattered by Katy Perry’s homage to their 60’s tune.
Beach Boy, Mike Love released a statement saying: “The Beach Boys are definitely not suing Katy Perry. In fact, we are flattered that her fantastically successful song is bringing to mind to millions of people our 1965 recording of the Beach Boys’ ‘California Girls.’ We think her song is great and wish her all the success in the world.”
Well thank the Lord for that. Afterall, if people started ranting about royalities everytime someone borrowed similar words, the song writing world would be a mighty bitter place.
