Elbow talk to t5m backstage after the ceremony about their joy at winning the award for best British group – and beating Coldplay in the process! ‘It feels great,’ says front-man Guy Garvey.
‘We’re just really glad that we didn’t do the spaceship,’ he says in reference to Take That’s weird and wonderful performance. ‘That was our idea… we were gonna do that!’
They’ve got the critical acclaim covered, winning last year’s Mercury Prize, and now they’re tackling the mainstream. Elbow thinks winning such a big award on home turf is ‘really special.’
‘There are several parties organised back in Manchester tonight with everybody sat round the television,’ says Guy Garvey, ‘It’s weird knowing they can see us but we can’t see them.’
And, once the partying’s over, it’s back on the road for Elbow who will play at all the cities they ‘didn’t do in our last British tour.’ Blackpool, for one.
