Another week, another win for comeback kid Jenson Button. Bahrain played host to the fourth race of the Championship today and saw Button take to the podium for the third time this season. Our Formula 1 expert and all-round motor-sport genius Dominik Prosser gives us the lowdown on Button’s winning streak, and his predictions for how the season will unfold.
It may have been the least exciting race of the year so far but Jenson Button’s mature drive has put him into a commanding position in the Championship as we head into Europe for the next nine races.
Qualifying was dominated by the Toyotas of Timo Glock and Jarno Trulli. They filled the first two grid places and looked to be in a strong position to win a first victory for Toyota. The Brawn GP and Red Bull Racing cars were always going to be a threat having shown well all year and Formula 1’s emerging star Sebastian Vettel duly took third behind the two Toyotas. Jenson Button placed a very useful fourth and Lewis Hamilton fifth in a fast improving Maclaren. Ferrari who before Bahrain hadn’t even scored a point brought Felipe Massa and Kimi Raikonen home in seventh and tenth respectively. With so many teams running such close lap times, and the added unpredictability of the KERS system being run by the bigger teams, the stage was set for an exciting and (unusually for this season) dry race.
The KERS system proved pivotal immediately as Lewis Hamilton used it to blistering effect racing into third place behind the two Toyotas. For the next lap Jenson and Lewis traded blows until Jenson put a great move on Lewis and moved into third promptly disappearing up the track in pursuit of the two Toyotas. Vettel was drawn into a battle with Hamilton that certainly cost him time but may have cost him the race. The two Toyotas pitted very early on lap twelve and it seems their pace in qualifying owed a lot to a light fuel load. That is to take nothing away from Button who drove consistently brilliant laps during his first stint enabling him to pass both Toyotas after their first fuel stops and pull away from Vettel who in fifth was being compromised by Hamiltons lack of pace. Trulli, Vettel and Hamilton traded blows for the remainder of the race but neither one being able to pass on the track. Vettel eventually passed Trulli at the second pit stop but by this time Button had pulled out a big enough gap to cruise to an impressive third victory of the season. Buttons emotional response over the team radio spoke volumes and its sure that Brawn GP never thought they’d be leading the championship after only their fourth ever race in Formula 1
The season has certainly produced a spectacle with the predicted running order reversed, new rules and technology, controversy at every corner, cancelled races, court hearings and the emergence of new talent . Ferrari and Maclaren will improve quickly as they perfect the two step rear diffuser that Brawn and others used to steal a march on their exaulted competition and it will be interesting to see who comes out on top after we leave Formula 1’s traditional stomping grounds in Europe. My money is on another extremely tight championship with Lewis Hamilton squeaking a second championship crown.
