Government says women should aim to be a size 14
26th July 2010 | 1 comments | 1 person likes this
The government’s new equalities minister Lynne Featherstone has spoken out against the size zero trend, stating that women should aspire to be a size 14 and cited Mad Men’s Christina Hendricks as a good “role model”.
Hendricks is known for her enviable hour glass figure and is not afraid to flaunt her size 14 figure in gorgeous, revealing outfits.
The actress was overlooked by fashion magazines for years for being larger but it’s her sumptuous curves that made her Esquire’s Sexiest Woman In The World.
The politician said although she felt the media had the right to publish whatever images they choose, “women and girls have the right to feel comfortable in their own bodies.”
Here, here Lynne Featherstone, how very well said. Last week we reported on Crystal Ren’s outrage when her curvy figure was retouched to appear skinny. It’s great to see women in power speaking out against the size zero trend and praising those who don’t fit the mold.

A collection from Wonderland

Coinciding with the much-awaited 2010 release of Tim Burton’s Alice in Wonderland comes the release of Tom Binns’ most adventurous jewellery collection to date. Having designed pieces for everyone who’s anyone, including the White House, Binns’ collection features jewellery influenced by Burton’s latest film.
Once an animator apprentice for Walt Disney Studios, Burton left the infamous film company as his drawings were considered too ‘dark’ to be used in any Disney picture. However, instead of restraining his unique illustrations and talents, Burton has reversed his fortune and become one of the most talked-about film directors of the 21st century. With blockbuster creations such as Edward Scissorhands, Nightmare Before Christmas, Planet of the Apes, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory and Sweeny Todd, Burton’s next release was always bound to be huge. Partnering with the company he left, Burton’s adaptation of Alice in Wonderland has sparked inspiration upon many designers already, including Tom Binns. Read more »

Pop Vs LOVE prove fashion magazines are back
20th August 2009 | 0 comments | 0 votes yet, click here to agree or disagree
Ever since LOVE magazine hit the newsstands with a naked Beth Ditto on the cover fashionistas everywhere hailed the new style magazine and its fabulous editor Katie Grand as the new Hot Thing. Not that Grand is new to the fashion scene at all, having ruled the roost as editor of uber-trendy style mag POP before her defection to Conde Nast last year amongst speculation that Bauer Media (who own POP) were not committed to her or the magazine. She has also styled campaigns and catwalk shows for Calvin Klein, Marc Jacobs and Louis Vuitton among others. All these juicy fashion contacts may mean that she has hot fashion celebrities queuing up to land the cover of LOVE, but for the up-coming issue she has gone completely the other way, using emerging young and relatively unknown talent for the cover and the content. There are two covers, one of Sting’s model daughter Coco Sumner and one of an eighteen-year-old musician from Birmingham, who was apparently ‘found’ by Grand on the internet. He may have had no idea who she, the photographer or the magazine was when he agreed to star on the cover but needless to say, having Katie Grand pick you out of nowhere must be a helping hand on the road to stardom. Steely Stella goes soft
4th August 2009 | 0 comments | 0 votes yet, click here to agree or disagree
Known for her sharp tailoring and fierce clothes, fashion designer Stella McCartney’s fall collection photographs are a stark alteration from her typical campaigns. Following in her mother’s footsteps, a famed animal rights protector, Stella’s strictly ‘no animals’ policy in the making of her clothes is ironically abandoned through starring Disney’s cast of Bambi in the photo shoot for her Fall campaign.
But why such a childlike figure alongside Stella’s famously severe clothes?
Apparently Stella wanted to juxtapose the innocence of such a recognisable figure with the fierceness of her clothes. Well the campaign definitely works; Bambi may look at home in the woodlands alongside his furry friends, but model Sigrid Agren, looks more edited in than the cartoon characters them selves. Keep an eye out for Bambi and co in September’s Issue of British Vogue. Who said fashion was becoming predictable….

The news zinging around the fashion wires this morning is that our very own fashion darling Alexa Chung is starring in the new season campaign for DKNY Jeans.
Alexa will feature in the UK autumn winter 09 campaign, with actress/musician Hilary Duff starring in the US version.
Over the past year Alexa Chung has gone from cute and quirky London girl to a internationally known Brit fashion icon, thanks to her move to the states and her prime time show on MTV. Her signature style of loose dresses and oversized cardigans, brogues and classic British labels such as Mulberry, have made her stand out of the American fashion crowd of the ultra-groomed and glam. Lily Allen’s special gems
28th July 2009 | 0 comments | 0 votes yet, click here to agree or disagree
Is Lily Allen the multi-tasker of the year?! While some of us can barely manage to walk and talk at the same time, Ms Allen is managing to continue her successful music career, become the latest Chanel campaign muse and launch a jewellery collection.
She unveiled her new range at an exclusive tea party yesterday afternoon at Claridges. There are three mini-collections featuring coins, fruit and animals. An enamel flamingo on a chain, favoured by the star, is predicted to be a hot favourite. The collection has been picked up by Argos and H Samuel but will most probably be picked up by more stores when it officially launches at the end of September. And Lily is determined to oversee every last detail of the range, especially as it has her name on it: “I really cared about what these pieces looked like. If your name is on the box, you make sure it looks good.” Read more »

Inglourious Basterds premiere:
It might have been wet and windy yesterday evening, but the stars still came out to shine on the red carpet, at the London premiere of Tarantino’s new movie Inglourious Basterds. Rihanna might not be in the film but definitely packed a punch on the red carpet wearing an Alexander McQueen jumpsuit. Diane Kruger, who stars in the film, looked as elegant as ever in a short strapless Balmain number teamed with every fashionista’s favourite, Christian Louboutin studded heels. The only criticism was that leading man and eye-candy Brad Pitt was absent from the event. Read more » -

Select lets go of talent.
Although between them they get more column inches than most of the super models, it was announced that Daisy Lowe, Alice Dellal and Pixie Geldof are no longer with Select Models. The agency has decided to let go of its talent section which had all three girls on its books. However, rumours are already flying around that the girls, who have featured in campaigns and on catwalks for the likes of Vivienne Westwood, Agent Provocateur and PPQ, were perhaps let go because of their partying habits and sociable lifestyles, which often overtake their modelling careers. However, latest news says all three girls were signed up by Next modelling agency after ‘their decision’ to leave Select. The plot thickens. Read more »
