The critically acclaimed feel-good film Slumdog Millionaire tonight emerged as the biggest winner at the BAFTAs – winning seven categories including best film and best director.
The film won the awards after being nominated in a staggering eleven categories. Harrow teenager Dev Patel enjoyed a riotous welcome on the red carpet earlier, and seemed overjoyed yet dazzled by the reception; ‘I’m a British boy, from Harrow, so it’s nice to get local support’. Dev was up against acting veterans Mickey Rouke and Brad Pitt for Leading Actor, which was won by Mickey Rourke tonight for his comeback in The Wrestler.
British films Hunger, In Bruges, Man on Wire and The Duchess also enjoyed BAFTA recognition. The biggest Hollywood success was The Curious Case of Benjamin Button which won three awards.
