t5m is so excited that London, has so many innovative and exciting art projects which make the city unique. We’ve already stumbled across First Floor Projects with James Tregaskes and the London Met students displaying their work in suitcases, and now the displaying of urban art takes another turn in the form of Tunnel 228, a new art project which opens today.
Until recently safely tucked away around the back of Waterloo station behind a graffiti covered door lay an empty space of railway tunnels and rooms, most recently used for storage. But visitors who open the door as of today will discover a spooky Narnia-like art and performance space, Tunnel 228.
The project is a collaboration between the local Old Vic theatre and performance company Punchdrunk along with 20 artists presenting their work and live performances. If you get a ticket it is your job to explore the space, some of the art is semi-displayed in the darkness, with pieces that people could easily miss, adding an exciting yet terrifying edge to the project. There is a magic forest, a shadowy monkey, a spooky wooden coffin with tiny bird chick heads and much more, including something called The Killing Machine which we will tell you nothing more about to keep you interested.
The project has been kept very hush-hush, a credit to its organisers-until now. It is free to get in, however you can only do so by the website tunnel228.com which has been cleverly designed so it appears to be one for a real company called Track and Rail Cleaning Ltd, and is being clogged by requests we write! We already have our tickets here at t5m, see you there!
