The Annual Academy Award shortlist was revealed for the 81st time today, following swiftly on from the BAFTA’s announcements earlier this month.

In typical form, many of the nominations echo those of BAFTA. Slumdog Millionaire is up for Best Picture again, and the late Heath Ledger for Best Actor in a Supporting Role.

This time Kate Winslet, who atrracted a wave of media attention following her two Golden Globes and two BAFTA nominations, receives only one from the Oscars; for Best Actress in a Leading Role in The Reader.

The critically-lauded Slumdog Millionaire received a total of ten nominations, pipped to the post only by The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, which received thirteen, including one for Brad Pitt as Best Actor in a Leading Role.

Popular underdog of the Bafta nominations, Dev Patel, is sadly missing from the Oscar’s Best Actor list for his role as a young boy from the Mumbai slums in Slumdog Millionaire.

Other contenders who did make the transfer include Penelope Cruz for Vicky Christina Barcelona, Sean Penn for Milk and Angelina Jolie for Changeling.

The Duchess, with Keira Knightley, picks up a nomination for costume design, whilst Waltz With Bashir contends Best Foreign Language Film and The Dark Knight is pitted against Revolutionary Road in the cinematography category.
