I would love to say there was a theme to the red carpet ensembles at this year’s BAFTA TV Awards – be it a particular length, a must-have designer or at least a dominant colour. Instead the BAFTA TV Awards 2009 was a hotch potch of everything from floor length vintage inspired navy, to shimmering cocktail dresses and mustard yellow bell-bottoms. Maybe it was the brilliant sunshine that encouraged everyone to ‘do their own thing’ – but whatever the reason, there was absolutely no chance of duplicate outfits at last night’s ceremony.

Stand out outfits include Mischa Barton’s Seventies-inspired midnight blue, floor length gown, accessorised with a huge gold necklace which would put Cleopatra to shame, providing something of a contrast to the summer time metallic cocktail dress worn by Skin’s leading lady Kaya Scodelario. Jaime Winstone matched Eastender’s star, Patsy Palmer, in a cocktail length black dress with similar metallic detailing, whereas Best Actress nominee Andrea Riseborough opted for a daring pair of yellow bellbottom trousers and black sequined halterneck.

At the same time, Louise Redknapp opted for something rather more romantic, with a Grecian-influenced scarlet gown accessorised with a studded clutch – Bionic Woman star Michelle Ryan also chose to wear red, in a complicated off-the-shoulder, rouched number.

Whereas some stars chose full-on, old school glamour – with floor length gowns, heavy make up and vertiginous heels -  others went for something more casual - with Alexa Chung wearing ra-ra ruffles in a Victoriana print and carrying an odd bag in the shape of a cat.

Yet despite there not being a clear trend, we think they all looked fabulous and reminded us why we all love award season quite so much!
