GQ played host to the country’s most stylish and beautiful stars last night as it presented the prestigious Man of the Year Awards 2009.

The glitzy ceremony took place at the Royal Opera House. The cream of the crop from the world of entertainment, politics, literature, film and music were celebrated.

“After a few years of metrosexual pretty boys taking the stage, 2009 saw the return of the tough guy. Mickey Rourke (complete with Hells Angel minder), Guy Ritchie and Jenson Button won awards, while Jason Stratham, The Wire’s Dominic West, Mark Strong and William Hague were among the hard men handing them out,” recalled GQ.

The GQ woman of the year was won by Lily Allen. After a difficult 2008, personally more than professionally, Lily has come back with bang and looks set to stay at the top after her hotly anticipated second album, ‘It’s Not Me, It’s You,’ which was released in February, got riverting reviews.

The International Man of the year award was picked up by Oscar nominated Mickey Rourke.

“Screwing up my career was never about drugs or about booze. It was always my attitude. I stupidly said acting wasn’t a job for a real man,” says Rourke.

Dizee Rascal scooped up the solo artist of the year award after securing his place in the top spot after his track “bonkers” was this year’s fastest-selling single, shifting 118,000 copies in its first week.

‘Recently described by Time Magazine as the greatest songwriter in the English language, it only seems fitting that GQ has awarded Elvis Costello the Outstanding Achievement Award 2009,’ reports GQ.

Other awards were picked up by Giles Deacon, who deservedly won the Designer of the year award, Micheal Sheen who is GQ’s Actor of the year. Jenson Button, Michael McIntrye, Take That and David Walliams were amongst other stars who won big at this years ceremony.
