La Roux is bringing the 80s synth sound back in a whole new way. She’s aiming to reinvigourate pop music, writing songs that are epic in the way pop songs were twenty years ago. Reflections are Protections gives me goosebumps, in a good way, and I’m a bit embarrassed to admit that about 100 of the 57875 plays it’s had on her MySpace page were mine. Her songs are addictive, attitude-laden yet spookily heartfelt. Make of it what you will, just make sure you catch one of her gigs this February.
The sensational La Roux takes to the stage at Notting Hill Arts Club tonight for the first of four live gigs in February. Commanding the coveted and rare month’s live residency at YOYO on Thursday nights, La Roux can expect queues around the block in anticipation of her hotly tipped synth-pop.
On the same label and management team as Klaxons, Brixton-born Elly Jackson cites Eurythmics, Depeche Mode, Gary Numan, Prince and Blancmange amongst her musical influences. When YOYO books an artist for four weeks running it means they’re something pretty special. She is the first artist to have a YOYO residency since Lily Allen played her first ever series of London gigs there three years ago. La Roux looks set to enjoy the same kind of chart success, especially as she’s supporting Lily in her 2009 UK tour.
