The Irish Rugby team received a hero’s welcome in Dublin yesterday, as thousands streamed into the city following their first Grand Slam victory since 1948, winning all their matches in this year’s Six Nations.
The crowds cheered as they waved flags, mascots and team-jerseys; and fans welcomed the escapism as Ireland faces its worst ever recession this year.
The 17-15 victory over Wales on Saturday cinched the deal, with fly-half Ronan O’Gara kicking the winning drop goal three-minutes from time, after Captain Brian O’Driscoll and right-wing Tommy Bowe both scored tries in quick succession, putting Ireland in the lead by 14 points to 6 in the first half.
It seems that, even after 61 years, the Celtic Tiger can still roar!
