‘Stephen Jones is the maker of the most beautiful hats in the world.’
Anna Piaggi is clearly one of master milliner Stephen Jones’ adoring fans. With such names in favour of his innovative and wacky designs, there’s really no disputing the topic of his excellence. The former Central St Martins’ student is bringing his creative eye to the V&A.
Jones has sourced 300 of the world’s most amazing hats to create an exhibition, Hats; An anthology by Stephen Jones. Gathered from not only the V&A collection but also other international museums and Hollywood archives, the exhibition sees the evolution of headwear focusing on the cultural and historical significance. Exhibited pieces span from 600BC to contemporary designs. The exhibition, which opens on the 24th is split up into four sections: Inspiration, Creation, The Salon and The Clients.
Expect to see some hair-raising designs from some of fashion’s biggest names including Balenciaga, Philip Treacy, Chanel and rising star Nasir Mazhar, whose personal collection will be showcased next Tuesday at London Fashion Week. This will be the V&A’s first ever exhibition solely dedicated to hats and conveniently in accordance with London Fashion Week which will see Nasir Mazhar’s debut, it appears milliners are finally getting the credit they deserve.
