The Design Museum is currently showing Hussein Chalayan’s ‘From Fashion and Back’, a must-see exhibition inspired by ‘airports and books’. As ambiguous as that sounds, have no fear as the show has been designed by the brilliant graphics collective Abake, following their work five years ago for the designers’ second line collection, Chalayan.
Twice awarded ‘British Designer of the Year’ in 1999 and 2000, the exhibition showcases 15 years of experimental projects that explore Chalayan’s creative approach, inspirations and themes that influence his work, such as cultural identity, displacement and migration.
His art projects include Repose, Absent Presence, Afterwords and Anaesthetics- all exploring the idea of wearable, portable architecture. You can see the strong influence Chalayan has on his contemporaries; one of the designers that make up Borba Margo (showing at London Fashion Week), Jessika Margo Goransson, worked with Chalayan and you can definitely see an appreciation of his innovative style.
The exhibition will run in conjunction with London Fashion Week and is open until the 17th May.
