What a night! The gowns, the speeches…oh yes, and the films all made last night’s Oscars compulsive viewing, despite the eight hour time difference. If you, rather more sensibly than us at t5m, decided to wait until this morning for a full update of the night’s events, then look no further – here we have all you need to know about the 81st Academy Awards.
It was a momentous night for the British film industry – with Slumdog Millionaire hitting the jackpot with eight awards, including Best Picture and Best Director for Danny Boyle, who accepted the award in the style of Winnie the Pooh for his children (too cute). Kate Winslet, who looked like a silver screen goddess in her one – shouldered grey gown with black overlay, went home with Best Actress for her performance in The Reader; and even the awards for Best Costume Design and Best Documentary went to British talent, The Duchess and Man On Wire.
Sean Penn was declared Best Actor for his portrayal of gay – rights activist Harvey Milk; and Heath Ledger was awarded Best Supporting Actor for The Dark Knight, which saw a standing ovation from the audience and emotional acceptance speech from his family.
But, we still can’t decide whose dress we most want – Penelope’s vintage Balmain? Frieda Pinto’s John Galliano number, or Beyonce’s goldleaf fish tail….
