Ray Winstone is a man who likes to do things his own way in both his personal and professional life. He says of unchallenged material “you read between the lines.”

As a boxer, he represented England twice, and as an actor he is no less pugnacious. When studying the plays of William Shakespeare, a man who has a self proclaimed “ear for it”, he doesn’t rely on literary critics to draw his conclusions for him. “You got to work that out for yourself.”

Ray Winstone is not talking without experience. He starred in the acclaimed interpretation of Shakespeare’s Macbeth, titled Macbeth on the Estate, which transports the medieval highlands to the Ladywood Estate in Birmingham. This is typical of Ray’s attitude. “Who’s someone… years later telling you what that means?”
