I am a freelance writer based in the UK. I am passionate about films and like to blog about releases, trends and reaction to movie news. I can easily watch The Godfather and Ferris Bueller's Day Off in the same sitting. There may be some righteous indignation about some of Hollywood's releases but you may discover some rare gems!

Great review Michael!

Kids films seems to have grown up this year. They seem intent on making you cry! First 'Up' (the opening sequence is possibly one of the most moving scenes I have ever seen) and now this!

You are right, these characters do feel entirely real. It is weird to think that most actors rarely have the same impact on the audience. The character detail and development is a true testament to how far animation has come over recent years. The emotional attachment I felt towards these creatures was incredibly unnerving.

The uneasy swirling effect you get from this film is something of rarity in modern day cinema. I can't get my head round how dark this film is! It's deeply satisfying.

I am intrigued to find out what a 9 year old version of ourselves would make of this movie. Would he come out as emotionally battered as us? or would they just enjoy it for the sparse but greatly uplifting moments of fun.

You are spot on with Karen O's soundtrack. It fits perfectly but ultimately might go amiss with the kids watching this film. Overly trendy but it brings a completely different dimension to the film.

I usually hate child actors. Max Records is certainly not a child in terms of acting abilities. What a performance. As the focal point, he held the piece together exquisitely. Ashton Kutcher & co. can definitely learn something from this kid.

I REALLY wish he could stay longer!!!

Brilliant review, and the soundtrack sounds as good as the film itself....
