Doctor Who Series 5, Episode 13 – The Wedding of River Song: A Review

Well, here we are at the end, and as they might say on (*spits*) The X Factor, what an emotional journey it's been.
As if the labyrinthine plots (by Saturday teatime drama standards at least) weren't exhausting enough, there've also been my valiant, but ultimately doomed, attempts to get these reviews up on time. Unfortunately I couldn't even manage it for the season finale, but then I'm actually quite glad that... -
Doctor Who Series 6, Episode 10 – The Girl Who Waited: A Review

Well, that was a surprise. I already voiced my concerns about the trailer for this week's episode looking a bit uninspiringly action-heavy in the previous review, but I forgot to mention that the writer's sole previous credit on Doctor Who was for the season two Age of Steel two-parter – the storyline that well and truly turned the Cybermen from my choice of most creepy Doctor Who monster (seeing clips...

Doctor Who Series 6, Episode 6 – The Almost People: A Review

I suppose I'll have to take back some of the things I said about last week's episode then. In other words, I quite liked this week's one, even if it didn't use the opportunity to expand the story further. In fact the more I think about it, I can't actually remember that much in the way of plot developments (and I sat through the episode twice before starting to write...

Doctor Who Series 6, Episode 4 – The Doctor’s Wife: A Review

Sorry for the delay in getting this up, unfortunately real life's got in the way a bit this week. Although part of the blame does lie with the episode itself as I did find that I had to watch it a couple of times before starting on this review. And even then, I still found myself struggling for words somewhat – mainly because I wanted to spare you all from...

Doctor Who Series 6, Episode 3 – The Curse of the Black Spot: A Review

After struggling to keep my gushing enthusiasm for last week's episode under control, I find myself with the opposite problem this time. Not that this week's was bad, it just wasn't really much of anything.
I don't think anybody was expecting it to be anything more than a filler episode (although with the series now being split into two shorter blocks of episodes, the presence of filler seems harder to forgive)... -
Doctor Who Series 6, Episode 2 – Day of the Moon: A Review

Ever get the feeling you've been cheated?
I was definitely thinking that at the start of this week's episode – they'd set so much up with last week's cliffhanger and then decided to jump ahead three months later. But if there's one thing I've learnt from Steven Moffat's previous Who episodes it's not to fight his (time) loopy approach to story structure. I'm not sure if the missing three months (in... -
Doctor Who Series 6, Episode 1 – The Impossible Astronaut: A Review
28th April 2011 | 4 comments | 1 person likes this
Over the last few years the Easter weekend has started to become less and less about chocolate (and even less about religion) and more about Doctor Who. From the anticipation about the start of a new series, to the watching (and occasional rewatching) of the opening episode, and then the pondering over the plot details and comparisons to previous episodes in order to work out if it's as good as...

Review: Paul – Close Encounters of the Blurred Minds

Would it be premature to bestow Simon Pegg with the status of 'national treasure'? Judging by the massive success of Paul's opening week in the UK it looks like he's heading there anyway.
Although if there was such a thing as a 'sure thing' at the box office, Paul would be it (well, in Britain at least). Following increasing interest in Pegg and Nick Frost's big screen outings; several TV stations... -
Review: Skyline – Invasion of the Shoddy Snatchers
16th November 2010 | 4 comments | 0 votes yet, click here to agree or disagree
Skyline marks the latest directorial offering from special effects whizzes 'The Brothers Strause' (pretentious is an overused word in film criticism, but I think it can be fairly ascribed to the brothers' method of crediting themselves) following the - unnecessary at best - Alien Vs Predator sequel. The story - clearly influenced by Independence Day and Cloverfield - covers a group of friends' reaction to an alien invasion, although Skyline has the unique selling point of being independently produced and...

Doctor Who Series 5, Episode 13 – The Big Bang

So that's it for another year then, or at least until Christmas. And I think it's fair to say that the episode definitely lived up to it's title and saw the series out with a bang.
After last week's confusion I tried my best not to worry too much about the specifics this time, as I think the important thing to do when presented with something as witty, clever and beautiful...
