Hillary Clinton “my husband is not the secretary of state, I am…”

When a student asked what her husband, Bill, thought about Chinese investment in the Congo yesterday, Hillary Clinton replied with a feisty “wait, you want me to tell you what my husband thinks, my husband is not the secretary of state, I am…”
Apparently, the student in the audience had actually asked about President Barack Obama's thoughts on financial contracts between China and Congo. The translator then mistakenly asked about Bill... -

Ayesha Vardag, founder of Ayesha Vardag Solicitors won Lawyer of the Week last week following her landmark win in the Court of Appeal acting for a German heiress in the prenup case Tatler headlined as “The divorce of the century”. I talked to her about women in the legal profession and her personal brand - this is what she had to say:

Pavement etiquette… summertime in London
13th July 2009 | 2 comments | 0 votes yet, click here to agree or disagree
London changes during the summer. The flavour, the rhythm, the pace - and the manners too. Whatever happened to pavement etiquette? Last week was just the beginning and after being knocked off the pavement, walked into, forced to constantly sidestep and stop dead in my tracks - and worse still, propositioned from open car windows as if every woman is fair game and a professional streetwalker, I feel the need...

The lying down game

Oh my what a week. Something has been missing and I have not been able to put my finger on it until now. Wimbledon, my guilty little pleasure – cramming meetings into the morning so that I can spend the afternoon in front of the telly. So its back to normal and not only is Wimbledon over, so is the heat wave.
And talking of sport, have you tried the... -

Is this a situation that you recognise?
You are on the shortlist for a role or in the running to secure a new deal or business opportunity. You know that you have the right qualifications, experience, expertise - and believe you have done all that you need to do, and more, to win. And yet, someone else scoops up the prize and you are left wondering why?Incredibly frustrating - and worrying... -
The House of Lords

I was lucky enough to be invited by Baroness Mary Goudie to listen to Jim Margolis, Senior Advisor to the Obama Presidential Campaign at the House of Lords yesterday.
Firstly, I have to apologise for the terribly un-British way that I queue hopped, elbowed and hustled to get through security in time for the 11am start. It seems that with schools out, busloads had arrived at precisely the same time.I digress,... -

BA won’t pay
17th June 2009 | 0 comments | 0 votes yet, click here to agree or disagree
It’s a real shame that BA’s CEO Willie Walsh isn’t a warm and cuddly personality. We might view yesterday’s revelation that 40,000 staff have been asked to work for no pay for up to four weeks, made via the company’s in-house newspaper in a different light. In a ‘we’re in this together’ light perhaps.
The offer: “Colleagues are being urged to help the airline’s cash-saving drive by signing up for unpaid... -

Austerity is the new black

I don’t know about you, but I am seeing a real resistance to anything wildly ostentatious, overly blinging or downright wasteful. The expansiveness of recent years divorced us all, with zero alimony in 2008 - like a severely wronged, disenchanted, now ex-spouse.
I recently attended the launch of a new restaurant in London. Fabulous décor, attentive service, sublime food. The only glitch? The portions were way, way too generous. Silly generous...
