Lady Gaga cemented her stardom in 2009 with her wacky dress sense and offbeat fashion choices. But as the eagerly awaited fashion week approaches who will reign supreme?

2009 saw a mix of flirty, fun, fabulous fashion as femininity reclaimed its place back into the heart of London’s fashion capital. Fashion powerhouse Burberry came back with a bang, Luella Bartley unveiled a collection of sweet, girly prints, whilst Vivienne Westwood played her part for British patriotism.

So what is in store for 2010?

Lady Gaga is set to maintain her fashion stakes from our screen straight onto the catwalk and in turn is influencing ‘off the wall’ designers to create awesomely quirky pieces, expect to see crazy, eccentric creations hit the 2010 runways. Having single-handedly made Alexander McQueen’s outrageous jeweled platforms infamous, the insane shoes have since captured the hearts of retailers, so this spring; expect to see many more great big platforms everywhere.

White dominated the spring/summer 09 catwalks. While last season saw the very best of sheer velvet and luxe fabrics, this season we will all be taking inspiration from Tim Burton’s fantastical wonderland and the Sex and the City girls are back with what is sure to be bright colours and bold get-ups.

Look out for fabrics adorned with intricate motifs, luxurious velvets and voluminous shapes in what industry experts are calling the ‘mushroom effect’. This trend is set to be a huge influence for Autumn/Winter 2010. Watch out for this on a catwalk near you.

The 2010 catwalks is sure to be set alight with fun fashion that will see us through to 2011. The mystical, mad fantasy world of Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland provides an imaginative vessel for fashion inspiration. Think big bows, frilly dresses and splashes of striking reds that is sure to ooze some eccentricity.

Who can forget the glamour of Cheryl Cole and Danni Minogue on the X factor? Put away bobby pins and straightners. This year will see the dishevelled, savvy style of Florence Welch in her age-old petticoats and fairytale dresses take center stage. No more spending hours in front of the mirror perfecting those tight curls and the slicked backed hair of yesteryear.

Sex and the City’s Flashdance-esque get up will see 80’s fashion back with a vengence. As we anxiously await the arrival of Carrie Bradshaw and the SATC2 girls to return to our screens this May. The big question is; what will Carrie and co. be wearing? Still shots have been circulating all over the internet for months now, and we’re pre-emptively getting excited about Eighties style thanks to Miss Carrie strutting around New York glorifying the questionable fashion sense this bygone decade brought us.

Be prepared for some serious sex appeal as the ladies of Nine seduce our TV screens with sultry costumes worn by Penelope Cruz. Underwear as outerwear is expected to adorn a few collections this year. And with costumes that include luxurious lace, gut-wrenching corsets and vampy lips (yes, we’re thinking Twilight), we certainly know who we’ll be imitating for our party-wear this year. After all, who doesn’t want to look like the Spanish beauty?

And finally, in Spring 2010, Mark Fast will be launching his hotly anticipated collection for Topshop, which is sure to leave many fashionistas drooling over his exquisitely crafted dresses. Since Mark Fast’s stylist walked out on him pre-show for choosing curvy women to commandeer down the runway, expect to see lots more curvy models and possibly more fashion-forward plus-size lines in the months ahead. Will this see the end of size zero on the catwalks? You decide.
