Fashion magazines are never afraid to test the waters with controversial photography and daring clothing, but Vogue Italia have decided to test the oiled waters with a controversial photo shoot.

The pictures, taken by photographer Steven Meisel, show model Kristen McMenamy posing in oil soaked sand, tied up in fish nets and spluttering water as she struggles to breath. The images are clearly inspired by the recent oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

Some have deemed the idea insensitive but Vogue Italia’s Editor and Chief, Franca Sozzani claimed the shoot, entitled Water and Oil has a message to “take care more about nature. I understand that it could be shocking to see and to look in this way these images.”

What do you think about the controversial theme?
