A lesser woman?

Excuse this contemplative blog but another birthday approaches and I do like to beat myself up around this time of year.
I've been thinking about the choices I've made that have brought me to this point in life. And I'm also, truth be told, dealing with the disappointment that is starting to compete with my middle-aged spread for the weight that I'm now carrying on a daily basis.Whenever I write a... -
World Cup: The Art of Rivalry

There's something sweet about being an ex-pat during the World Cup.
You seek out your own people, you get drunk, you cheer, you groan and ultimately, if England are playing, you cry like babies.Brits In LA, the social networking group run by my mates Eileen Lee, Craig Young, James Ridley and Darren Darnborough, teamed up with the LA Museum of Contemporary Modern Art (LACMA) and BAFTA/LA to host a staunchly passionate... -
Twitter: revenge of the nerds

There was a mini-backlash over my decision to quit Twitter for a while.
Some of you are with me, some are against. In fact, I can almost divide the 'thank goodness you quit' versus the 'when are you coming back?' into age groups. It seems that the over-40's aren't that interested in distilling their lives into 140 characters. Or maybe they're just busy making sure the kids are fed and watered?And... -
Welcome to my Tweltdown

I deactivated my Twitter account two weeks ago.
Apologies to my 192 (last count) followers but it was getting too much for me. I know, crazy. But a Twitter account is the ultimate self-branding tool and I wasn't finding it much fun anymore. Here was my thinking: many of the people I follow are successful in their field. I am still trying to make my dreams happen. I felt like I couldn't... -
Laughs a go-go in LA

Another box ticked. Last weekend I met Jane Lynch, currently the funniest actress on TV as psychotic PE teacher Sue Sylvester in Glee. If you haven't seen her Madonna tribute, click here now or burn your fingerless lacy gloves in shame.
Jane was appearing at the second LA Comedy Shorts Film Festival and I managed to grab her for a quick word before the opening gala screening at the Downtown Independent... -
Reinvention ain’t easy

I recently returned from a three week trip to Europe. I hadn't been back in over a year so was due some quality time with friends and family. I also needed a few days away from my laptop as my brain had turned to mush after two years of writing without a break
Condensed to the size of a matchbox in my economy seat on the flight back to LA, I... -
The Death of an Ex

Last week I discovered that the man I lived with for four years in my early twenties had died. Not only that, he'd died two years ago.
This was a man who worked out regularly, played a mean guitar, never smoked, drank in moderation and who suffered a fatal heart attack.
Our break up was amicable and although we hadn't been in contact for the best part of a decade, I've spent... -
Spring Has Sprung

It feels like spring is in the air. Maybe it's because the Oscars are over, or the fact that it hasn't rained for a while but last week I pulled my dust-covered flip-flops out of my walk-in closet instead of my Ugg boots.
Then I saw the state of my winter feet, threw the flip-flops to one side and put my boots back on. Hobbit-feet are singularly unattractive in a woman.... -
Hollywood Brunch

Last week, the pictures of both Cheryl Cole arriving at a recording studio in Hollywood and Simon Cowell strolling around his manicured Bel Air neighbourhood, made me chuckle. It's no wonder that people aspire to this kind of lifestyle - it looks so perfect and I suppose on some levels it is.
Before I moved to LA I had a very one-dimensional view of how people lived here, informed mostly by... -
Salvation at the Salton Sea

I escaped the Superbowl last weekend, and in some style.
Taking advantage of the empty roads, my boyfriend and I decided last minute to drive to the Joshua Tree National Park, where I discovered a world so far from Hollywood, so strange, surreal and downright scary, that four days on, I'm still wondering whether or not it was all a dream.
We spent the night in the desert at the 29 Palms...
CONTRIBUTOR
Lisa Marks
British writer Lisa Marks moved to Los Angeles two years ago to pursue her dream of 'making it' as a screen-writer in Hollywood. A few months after arriving in the States her short film, Maconie's List, won the Duke City Shootout film festival. Directing her own short was a dream come true and now her goal is to sell a feature. She can generally be found tapping away at her laptop in any number of coffee shops muttering furiously to herself. Don't worry, this is all perfectly normal.
