If being the world’s greatest surfer isn’t enough – Kelly Slater is now expanding into designing his own boards, and will be showcasing his first creation at the Quicksilver Pro on the Gold Coast this week.

Kelly will be aiming for his tenth World Title at the competition – alongside rising stars Julian Wilson, Dane Reynolds and Danny Wills. But it seems he is already a winner in the eyes of the 2007 Quicksilver Pro champion Mick Fanning who said that if Kelly ‘ stormed out of the blocks as he did last season, title number 10 could be a foregone conclusion’.

We’re wishing Kelly lots of luck!

Nine time world title winner and most decorated surfer in the world, Kelly Slater, sits down with t5m to talk about his professional surfing career.

Slater turned pro at the age of 18, went on his first world tour at 19, and by 20 had won his first world title, and again for the next five of six years after that, an incredible feat for such a young surfer.

The lifestyle is an exciting but exhausting one. The chance to travel the world doing what you love, meeting incredible people and doing incredible things is a huge pro, but one event a month in eight different countries, every year from March through December would be tiring for anyone.

“I set goals for myself to get me from Point A to Point B.” Setting goals for himself to accomplish every year: first one world title, then two, than try for the record of four in a row, and finally the big one, five in a row to be the best surfer in the world. Slater tells us that, after five world titles in a row, he’d run out of goals, and so decided to take a break. Well deserved I’d say.

Though the surf may not be very impressive on a worldwide level, it’s the best waves to find in Florida. World surfing champion, Kelly Slater, tells t5m what it was like living there and how he came to love surfing.

He gives us the inside look at where to find the best surf in Cocoa, and tells tales of his most memorable waves there.

Believe it or not though, Kelly Slater didn’t always dream of being the world’s best surfer. As a matter of fact, he wanted to be Steve Martin when he grew up. He offers a life lesson for little kids with big dreams, “Whatever it is you love, just follow it. Because you can always make a life out of that.”

For Slater, who comes from a family of surfers, surfing and being on the beach came to him as a family event. Kelly was on the beach before he could talk and completely suntanned by his first birthday.

Spending time at the beach and a family sense of adventure formed Kelly’s childhood in Cocoa Beach, Florida, and surfing became the “natural thing to do” for Kelly.
