A clearer point of view

I had one of those special mummy moments today, when you just have to sit back and marvel at the beautiful insight of children.
On seeing two men kissing in the park, Ruby gave me a big smile and said, "Look, Mummy, those men love each other." It didn't occur to her that there was anything different about the scene, or that it was comment-worthy for any reason other than to... -

Nothing entertains me quite as much as the things Ruby comes out with.
We were walking in Central Park the other day when we saw a man dancing in the middle of the road. No music or anything - just rocking out to whatever track was playing inside his head. To be honest, I didn't even look twice. You get a lot of that sort of thing out here and even... -

I have been so impressed with Ruby since I've been in the States. A few really horrendous, whiningly jet-lagged days aside, she has been a delight, and she really does get attention everywhere she goes. She smiles an angelic smile on that cherubic face with its white-blonde halo, and she wraps the toughest men and the hardest women around her little finger. She's had a lot of adjustments to make...

My apologies for my silence over the last couple of weeks. Things have been slightly manic, to say the least. I've been packing up my life to move to New York for six months, tying up all the loose ends and trying to see all my friends here before I go. At the last minute I found an apartment. My best friend went to view it for me the morning...

Anyone who has a toddler will know that a predominant word in a child's early vocabulary is "No!" It's pretty standard, and there are ways around it: You offer alternatives, rather than questions that invite a yes or no answer; you distract; you pick your battles; you employ tactical bribery; you have a gin and tonic. The thing with children, though, is that as soon as you have developed a...

The power of positive thinking

Well, in case you were wondering, it turns out that transatlantic apartment-hunting is not all that easy. Firstly, I haven't decided exactly where I want to be living and it is becoming clear just how indecisive I really am. I change my mind almost hourly between Chelsea and Chinatown, East Village and Upper East Side. Some days I even fancy Brooklyn.
My indecision is somewhat incidental though, given how few apartments... -

I have a secret to tell you. I've been keeping it under my hat until I could be sure it would happen, but now my flights are booked and there's no going back, so I can finally announce that on September 29th Ruby and I will be leaving for six months in New York.
Honestly, I am terrified, but I have never been so excited in my life. This is a... -

If my daughter spoke french (or had ever watched the Muppets) her catchphrase would almost certainly be Qui, moi?! That's not to say she in any way resembles Miss Piggy, in fact I think it's fair to say she is a very pretty girl, but she is a confirmed lover of the limelight. In particular, she loves attention from men. She goes up to my male friends and declares her love, and she...

So… I am 32,000 feet in the air, without a child. This, people, is exciting stuff. I am on my way to New York to see my best friend for a strictly child-free weekend. The Visa Waiver application asked if I intended to “engage in immoral activities”. Well, yes, of course I do.
The last (and only other) time I have been away without her was for a similar long New... -

Now, I had lots of plans for what I would write about for my second blog entry. I had high hopes for some witty observations, perhaps some irony, maybe some shrewd insight and even a touch of poignancy... Well, things transpired. I ended up spending the night before last in hospital with my little girl, and I am clean out of wit and irony.
I put her to bed as usual,...
