Last weekend saw the return of vintage extravaganza ‘Frock Me’ to the Capital and I was one of the first in line for the event.
I even sacrificed a day of sunbathing in the unusually hot weather, I probably would have got sunburn anyway, to spend my Sunday morning rummaging through garments from 1920s flapper to fifties glamour and eighties retro at Chelsea Town Hall.
However despite the huge number of stalls I couldn’t help but feel largely disappointed with the selection of clothes and accessories for sale. Hoping to buy a summer dress I was taken aback by the lack of dresses on offer for petite girls. Not only this but most stalls sold identical pieces and offered little choice apart from feminine vintage lace tops, embellished dresses, beaded jewellery and worn leather satchels.
Then of course there were the more unusual items for sale-why anyone would want a saddle bag, pointed bra or meringue wedding dress is beyond me.
One thing I couldn’t complain about was the price, with garments starting from an affordable £10 and ranging to over £100 for designer pieces. The themed tea room was also a highlight with it’s homemade cakes and scones, which gave me the chance for a well earned break after riffling through rail upon rail of vintage.
I had heard that designers and celebs often come to the ‘Frock Me’ sales for inspiration. I definitely left feeling uninspired but still with a full purse.
The next ‘Frock Me’ is on 19 September at Chelsea Town Hall. Admission£4 for adults.
