Review: Tron Legacy – Ctrl Alt Obsolete
4th January 2011 | 1 comments | 1 person likes this
Like most malevolent forces, Disney had quite a good 2010. After scorching the fur of fun from the corpse of Alice in Wonderland with retrospectively applied 3D it fuelled kidiocy like The Sorcerer’s Apprentice and Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time in the summer, leaving Pixar to clean up the mess with Toy Story 3. Although by association this triumph became the dainty silk handkerchief which Mickey Mouse used...

Top 10 Films of 2010
3rd December 2010 | 4 comments | 1 person likes this
The year is almost over and if you could just stop eating snow for a minute and read this you might find out which 10 films I think made the biggest impact in 2010. Afterwards you can eat as much snow as you like, see if I care. You’re mad, you are.
I’ve attached links to the ones I reviewed in full so you can check out a lengthier look at... -
Review: Megamind – Meh-gamind
2nd December 2010 | 0 comments | 1 person likes this
On my way to see Megamind I did briefly wonder whether I’d bother reviewing it afterwards.* I saw Despicable Me when it was out, found it to be a little dull but perfectly palatable, like Quorn or Boxing day, and couldn’t muster the enthusiasm to write a review afterwards. Kids Movie Triple-Bill: Karate Kid, Last Airbender, Sorcerer’s Apprentice

After nursing an emotional erection for Toy Story 3* over the last few weeks it seemed sensible to check out the other kid-oriented cinematic offerings of the summer.
The Karate KidWhen Jaden Smith ascends to superstardom, as he inevitably will, I only hope he retains the infectious likeability of his father. It’s going to be hard to achieve given his incredibly public, privileged upbringing, but The Karate Kid shows the first... -
Review: Toy Story 3 – Playtime is over
23rd July 2010 | 2 comments | 1 person likes this
Like all of Pixar’s movies, Toy Story 3 isn’t really for kids. I’m verging on massive condescension with that statement, because of course the cartoony liveliness of the onscreen action is stimulating to the mealy-mouthed, teat-feeding youth of this world. However, I don’t think that any film in this venerable franchise, or any of the studio’s other work, comes closer to being an adult-oriented film.
I was nine years old when... -
Review: Shrek Forever After – Get Ogre It
16th July 2010 | 0 comments | 1 person likes this
The Shrek franchise has managed to consume itself over the past decade, with a boring sequel followed by an even worse third entry conspiring to soil the memory of the original. Having said that, the first movie has not aged well, with its pop culture references anchoring and degrading it in a way that sets it apart from the timeless classics pumped out by Pixar during the same period. The...
