To make a hit record more than just a good voice, some meaningful lyrics and a flashy video are required. Yes, there needs to be finely tuned equipment programmed to transform vocals, beats and backing tracks into something glossy and memorable – something Hugh Padgham.
The man credited with greating the ‘gated drum sound’ has now inspired a new generation of studio equipment, the Pop Compressor, to be released by music impressarios Airwindows.
The brains at Airwindows explain that:
“I was listening to Mama and other songs off the eponymous Genesis album, and couldn’t believe how overwhelming Hugh Padgham had Phil Collin” vocal sounding. It reached out and grabbed and defined every detail so aggressively – I needed to make a special compressor that could deliver a sound like that, because nothing I had was designed for such aggressive behaviour”.

it would only be a delight if more effects (other than autotune) were used in pop music. when all kanye west has to pass onto his protege is a technique for recreating cher’s unsettling hit from over 10 years ago, it’s an indication that things could be better. without the innovation in other genres of music, we’d probably all still be singing doo wop numbers at the local watering hole. on second thoughts..
