Guy Pratt – the renowned bassist who has worked with everyone from All Saints to Madonna and The Smiths talks to t5m about everything from his ‘epiphany’ whilst on holiday with his family that he desperately wanted to play music, to his ‘absurd and ridiculous’ tour with Pink Floyd and his more recent foray into stand-up comedy.

With his infectious sense of humour and bounds of energy, Guy not only entertains us with his outlandish anecdotes, but we also get a glimpse of him in action – as he plays us everything from his favourite disco basslines, to the epic seven minute ‘Us and Them’ by Pink Floyd.

Giving us an exclusive insight into the life of one of the most successful bassists in the music industry, Guy Pratt charms and amuses like never before!

Guy Pratt pulls out his beloved Fender jazz bass to play the classic disco basslines for t5m, including ‘Good Times’ by Chic, and ‘Staying Alive’ by the Bee Gees.

As his fingers fly up and down the strings, he tells us that his bass was the best present he could’ve asked for. As one of the first Fender jazz basses ever made, it was left outside his door wrapped in a pink ribbon on his wedding night, from Pink Floyd’s David Gilmore.

Watching him play, it’s easy to see why Guy Pratt is such a legend on the bass.

He goes on to describe working with Madonna and his surprising (to himself) performance on ‘Like a Virgin.’ He thought he sounded so good that he didn’t believe it was him!

Guy Pratt sits down with t5m to continue down the timeline of his monumental career in music. He explains the move away from rock and punk music into branches of experimentation in genres like jazz and disco.

This shift, which he explains was started with Michael Jackson’s ‘Off the Wall,’ led up through the early 80s, or ‘the glory years of the bass.’

“You couldn’t be too loud, too flash, or wear it too high.”

Guy also takes a moment to show off his perfectly sculpted and bodaciously attractive thumb, so formed by years and years of ’slapping,’ or playing the bass.

Although he's not short of offers now, Guy Pratt recounts how difficult it was to form a band in the early days

Guy Pratt is a true music veteran. As far as playing in bands, he’s been around the block a few times to be sure. A session bass player who’s played with the likes of Pink Floyd, Madonna, Iggy Pop, Michael Jackson, Natalie Imbruglia, and The Smiths, he no longer has to find a band to play with, they’re nearly knocking down the door asking him to.

But of course, it wasn’t always that way. Guy Pratt describes to t5m the search for a band to play with, the audition process, and the thrill of finally playing bass in a band.

Guy Pratt tells us about the painstaking process of naming a band, and how he wishes he'd named his band The The

Guy Pratt gives an animated account on his feelings of the ever-paramount band name, and describes the influence or inefficiency of some that he’s heard. He explains the time that goes into creating the perfect name, one that encapsulates the vibe of the music in the title, and even rattles off a few rejected examples for us.

His first proper band, Speedball, was often confused with the lethal drug concoction that was a favourite of Rolling Stones frontman, Keith Richards. Better though, than the band name on every band’s list: The The, which was eventually used by Matt Johnson in 1982.

He moves on to describe that every progressive rock band needs a colour in their name, such as Deep Purple and Pink Floyd, and further accounts for the true genious behind the name The Who.

Famed bassist Guy Pratt tells us about his first guitar, his first childhood band and his love of Bob Dylan

Once upon a time, Guy Pratt dreamt of being a pilot. But one fateful day, feeling sick after his first cigarette and recovering in his cousin’s bed, he switched on a cassette player and first heard The Who’s ‘Who’s Next’.

From there, Guy knew he’d be a musician. He begged his parents for a guitar, and when they said no, he tricked them into a bass guitar, not knowing the difference between the two.

He speaks to t5m about what led him to music and the bass, his first bands: A Nice Pear and Speedball, and finding inspiration from his step-dad’s records like Bob Dylan’s Highway 61, Jimi Hendrix’s Smash Hits.

“If you’re going to be in a band, you have to write your own songs, there’s no two ways about it.”

The now world-renowned session bass player, who has collaborated with countless musicians on albums and world-tours, explains to t5m how he became the legend he is today.
