Last night anybody who’s anybody in the world of fashion and movie’s attended the 2010 Costume Institute gala (or the Met Ball to you and I) in New York.

This year’s theme and that of the accompanying exhibition was The American Woman: Fashioning a National Identity.  American femmes – from Sarah Jessica Parker, Brooke Shields and Oprah Winfrey to January Jones, Katy Perry, Kirsten Dunst, Chloe Sevigny, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Claire Danes graced the red carpet.

There were plenty of international women also joining in - including co-host Anna Wintour, Gisele Bundchen, Naomi Campbell, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Emma Watson, Carey Mulligan, Donatella Versace, Marion Cotillard and Diane Kruger – and Sienna Miller even stepped out officially with Jude Law for the first time since they reunited.

So what about the outfits on the night?  Well white and metallic gowns were in abundance with one dress that actually lit up! (Katy Perry’s).

Quirky British style was very much in evidence. While most of the guests opted for floor-length evening gowns, the Bafta winning actress, Carey Mulligan wore a lilac mini-dress. And Alexa Chung decided to stick with her (yawn) tomboy look and wore a tuxedo and braces.
