Charlie Muirhead – Founder and CEO
Having started out without any previous business experience or industry contacts, Muirhead has, through sheer determination and relentless energy, become one of the industry’s most well-regarded entrepreneurs, networkers, and telecoms industry experts.
Today, Muirhead is Founder and CEO of t5m – the 5th medium. Prior to t5m, Charlie’s previous role was as Founder and President of software company Nexagent, which he founded in 2001 with Chris Gare, formerly of Cable & Wireless, and David Page from Cisco Systems, with over £30m in funding from investors including Apax Partners, Atlas Venture, Benchmark Capital, Quester Capital, Lago Ventures, and iGabriel.
Nexagent is the pioneer and world leader in process automation solutions for delivering advanced IP services across multi-network environments. Its licensed technology enables carriers and systems integrators to automate and accelerate the creation, provisioning and management of advanced IP services over multiple carrier networks. As well as dramatically reducing time-to-market for new services, Nexagent’s customers benefit from increased operational efficiencies, improved productivity and greater service performance – all key to remaining competitive in a crowded marketplace.
Prior to Nexagent, Muirhead founded iGabriel.net in May 2000 – an angel investment network of 30 business leaders providing start-up companies with capital and access to a network of industry leaders and entrepreneurs. iGabriel.net made 7 investments of which 5 are operating and 1 is now profitable. iGabriel has now merged its operations with Pi-Capital, which today boasts over 200 angel members.
Muirhead’s success began in 1996 with the inception, flotation and acquisition of Orchestream, market leader in IP Service Activation software for MPLS-VPNs whose customers included AT&T, Vodafone, and Energis. In June 2000, when Charlie was just 24, Orchestream listed on both the London Stock Exchange and NASDAQ and was valued at over £1bn. The company was acquired in 2003 by another NASDAQ listed OSS software company, Metasolv.
Over these years, Muirhead has engaged and listened to the needs of over 100 carriers, many of the world’s leading integrators and virtual network operators, and over 50 global enterprises. This has enabled him to gain a unique and true understanding of the complex challenges and needs of carriers and system integrators.
